A Resurrection Journey has been created and coordinated by The Revd Sarah Park (Diocesan Ministry Educator). It is the result of Sarah’s sabbatical leave in 2016 and builds on the work she and Karen Spoelstra did in creating the 2016 Lent Calendar.
This project arose out of the suspicion that, as Anglicans, we suffer from misplaced liturgical focus. Sarah says, “I have long thought that as a Church we do a great job of observing Lent, often to the detriment of Easter. My experience in parish ministry was that so much energy had gone into Lenten and Holy Week preparations that I had very little energy remaining for Eastertide. Easter felt like it was about survival, not resurrection life. A liturgical focus which dwells on human weakness during Lent without also dwelling on God’s goodness in the resurrection life of Easter has serious implications for spirituality.”
This calendar is one attempt to redress this balance. It begins on Palm Sunday, journeys through Holy Week to Easter Day and then encompasses the entire Easter Season, right up to Pentecost. Those on Facebook can receive a daily reminder from our Facebook page: A Resurrection Journey.
Content has been drawn from Sarah’s favourite authors and artists around the world as well as those in our back yard. Diocesan staff have been very generous in loaning their time and voices. Eleanor Calder and Melinda Cho have once again helped out with audio and video. Photos for each of the day’s pages are from Aotearoa.
Resurrection Journey is unashamedly from the Diocese of Auckland, by the Diocese of Auckland and for the Diocese of Auckland. And anyone else who might want to participate. Welcome! We hope that this calendar will be a tool for deepening your faith.
And at the conclusion of the calendar you’ll be invited to give a short bit of feedback telling us who you are, where you’re from and what you’ve found helpful.
